Emily Xiao Wang
Soprano
Born in China, Emily Xiao Wang completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the SHANGHAI NORMAL UNIVERSITY and has a post-graduate degree in Opera Performance from the VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF THE ARTS, THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE.
She has been a recipient of the MABEL KENT ESTATE SINGING SCHOLARSHIP and of the HAROLD FISHER OPERA SCHOLARSHIP and was a finalist in the AUSTRALIAN SINGING COMPETITION OPERA AWARD in 2005 and a semi-finalist in the GERMAN-AUSTRALIAN OPERA GRANT in 2006.
While studying in Shanghai, she performed with the SHANGHAI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA as soprano soloist in Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO.9 and for the VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF ARTS she appeared in its productions of BOHEMIOS and ENGLISH ECCENTRICS during 2000, in OPERA GERMANICA during 2001, in the title role in SUPERNOVA JONES and in HOTEL CHARLES, both in 2002. She was also a soloist in the VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF THE ARTS‘ OPERA BITES singing roles including Gilda in RIGOLETTO, Pamina in THE MAGIC FLUTE, Zerlina in DON GIOVANNI, Mimi in LA BOHEME and Juliet in ROMEO & JULIET.
Since graduating from the VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF ARTS, Emily Xiao Wang has gained considerable experience both on the operatic and concert stage.
During 2003 she appeared in the role of Nedda in I PAGLIACCI for MELBOURNE CITY OPERA.
In 2004 she performed at OPERA IN THE PARK with MORE THAN OPERA and in MOZART PLEASE with the SALON ROUGE ORCHESTRA.
During 2005 Emily Xiao Wang‘s appearances included the role of Servilia in Mozart’s LA CLEMENZA DI TITO for the VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF ARTS’ OPERA STUDIO, staged concerts with MORE THAN OPERA at the GEELONG PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE and the BENALLA PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE and RIGOLETTO: A STAGE OPERA CONCERT with the SALON ROUGE ORCHESTRA. She was engaged as soprano soloist for performances of the Faure REQUIEM with the MELBOURNE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA at the CASTLEMAINE STATE FESTIVAL and also for SPARKLING KEYS with THE TEAM OF PIANISTS in concerts for the NATIONAL TRUST.
During 2006 she performed with internationally renowned pianist, Alan Kogosowski, in concerts broadcast on 3MBS FM from RAHEEN.
Her appearances during 2007 included being soloist at the ORGANS OF THE BALLARAT GOLDFIELDS FESTIVAL, concerts with the MELBOURNE MANDOLIN ORCHESTRA as part of the MELBOURNE ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL, further appearances as soloist with THE TEAM OF PIANISTS and being soloist in Mozart arias with the ZELMAN ORCHESTRA, of which THE AGEcritic wrote, (Emily Xiao Wang)… supremely clear & expressive.
During 2008 Emily Xiao Wang‘s appearances included an invitation to return to the ORGANS OF THE BALLARAT GOLDFIELDS FESTIVAL, and her debut with MELBOURNE OPERA in the role of the Countess in its Melbourne performances of Mozart’s THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO.
